As Online Managing Editor for Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, Rowell leads many of the school's online efforts.

She edits Dean Bill Chameides's blog, thegreengrok.com, an online discussion area about sustainability and environmental science. She is spreadheading the school's Web 2.0 efforts. She also directs, shoots, and edits short video features on sustainable solutions to environmental issues.

Editor, Environmental Defense

Five years of environmental writing

A key member of Environmental Defense Fund's tiny web staff. Rowell created some of the organizations most popular pages, including the Guide to Energy-Efficient Lighting, which the Philadelphia Enquirer called "unparalleled" and Smithsonian magazine called the buying guide "the best CFL guide on the Net."
The guide led Spirit Magazine to invite Rowell to be part of its "Expert On" [pdf] series.

She developed and wrote the bulk of the content for FightGlobalWarming.com, an information hub about climate change, its effects, and solutions. She also led the organization's efforts to create an online primer on the link between hurricanes and climate change, working closely with five scientists, a GIS expert, and photo editor, editing and coordinating the content.

Technology Editor, ABCNEWS

Managed the main SciTech page

Rowell oversaw the selection and ranking of technology stories, writing headlines and deks and covering breaking news. She planned, assigned and edited articles, commentaries, review packages and features.

Supervised a staff of writers and producers; recruited and oversaw a stable of freelancers. Coordinated with ABCNEWS radio and TV producers; gave radio interviews. Worked with graphics and photo teams, and outside content partners, such as CNet.

Rowell covered technology news (see here and here) and analysis, as well as the intersection of arts and technology (see here and here). When moved, she also covered general arts features, like this Valentine's piece on music.

Rowell oversaw selection and ranking of news stories throughout the daily news cycle, writing headlines and deks. Sh e also produced, edited, and wrote stories and other content. She was promoted to copy chief within nine months.

In addition to copy editing the entire site, she line edited international and national news and feature articles.

Feature stories include: a piece on Pokemon mania, a style piece on hair coloring, and a sports article on women's World Cup soccer.

She also wrote book reviews on The Pianist, Celebration U.S.A., and Girls in America: Their Stories, Their Words .

Rowell edited the Chelsea and film section of Inside New York, a guide to New York City. She has also copy edited for Scholastic Education.
